How AKTU CGPA is Calculated — Official Method
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU), formerly known as UPTU, follows a 10-point absolute grading system under the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS). Each subject carries a fixed credit weightage, and your performance is assigned a grade point from the official scale.
SGPA Formula (Semester Grade Point Average)
SGPA (Si) = ฮฃ(Ci × Gi) / ฮฃCi
Where:
Ci = Credits of the ith course
Gi = Grade Points scored in the ith course
Example (Semester 3):
Maths-3 (4 credits, A+ = 9): 4 × 9 = 36
Data Structures (4 credits, O = 10): 4 × 10 = 40
COA (3 credits, A = 8): 3 × 8 = 24
OS Lab (2 credits, O = 10): 2 × 10 = 20
Physics-2 (3 credits, B+ = 7): 3 × 7 = 21

Division Classification (Official AKTU Ordinance)
- ๐ First Division with Honours: CGPA ≥ 7.5 AND all subjects passed in first attempt (no backlogs)
- ๐ฅ First Division: CGPA ≥ 6.5 (within max 10 semesters)
- ๐ฅ Second Division: CGPA ≥ 5.5
- ๐ Pass: CGPA ≥ 5.0

Grace Marks Policy
๐ AKTU Grace Marks: Students admitted under CBCS 2018-19 can receive up to 10 grace marks per academic year to pass a theory subject. The result is marked as PWG (Pass with Grace). Grace marks cannot be used to improve a passing grade.
Tips to Improve Your AKTU SGPA
- ๐ฏ Target high-credit subjects — A 4-credit course impacts SGPA twice as much as a 2-credit lab.
- ๐ Secure internals (30 marks) — 30% is from internal assessment; scoring 25+ here gives you a strong base.
- ๐ซ Avoid F grade at all costs — F = 0 grade points and becomes a permanent E (4 GP) even after clearing.
- ๐ Challenge Evaluation — If unsatisfied with result, apply for re-checking (~₹2500/subject) within the deadline.
- ๐ Focus on P→C→B upgrades — Moving from P (4) to B (6) adds 2 GP per credit — massive SGPA boost.

What is the minimum CGPA to get a B.Tech degree from AKTU?＋
A minimum CGPA of 5.0 is required to be awarded the B.Tech degree from AKTU. If your CGPA falls below 5.0, you must clear remaining backlogs before the degree can be awarded.
How do I convert AKTU CGPA to percentage?＋
AKTU has two accepted formulas: Simple: Percentage = CGPA × 10 (confirmed by AKTU's official Twitter). For official documents per AKTU ordinance (Ref: AKTU/RO/2019/1421): Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Most placement forms and job applications accept CGPA × 10.
What is the difference between SGPA, YGPA and CGPA in AKTU?＋
SGPA (Semester GPA) is your performance in one semester. YGPA (Yearly GPA) is the combined weighted average of two semesters in one academic year. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is your overall performance across all semesters of the entire B.Tech program.
What happens if I get an F grade in AKTU?＋
An F grade (0 grade points) means you failed that subject. You must reappear in the supplementary/carry-over exam. Once you pass, you receive an E grade (4 grade points) regardless of your actual score. This protects your CGPA from being permanently zero but limits your maximum contribution from that subject.
What CGPA is needed for First Division with Honours in AKTU?＋
You need a CGPA of 7.5 or above AND you must have cleared all subjects in your first attempt (no backlogs in any semester). Even one F grade in any attempt disqualifies you from Honours, even if later cleared.
Is AKTU the same as UPTU?＋
Yes. UPTU (Uttar Pradesh Technical University) was renamed to AKTU (Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University) in 2015 in honour of former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. The grading system, CGPA formula, and ordinances remain the same for both UPTU and AKTU graduates.
How many grace marks does AKTU allow?＋
For students admitted under the 2018-19 B.Tech scheme, AKTU allows up to 10 grace marks per academic year to help pass a theory subject. For the 2016-17 scheme, the limit is 7 grace marks per year. Grace marks are only awarded to help a student pass — not to improve a passing grade.
