What Grade Should My Child Be In?

Schools place children by age on a fixed cut-off date, not by the day the school year starts. In most US states the rule is simple: a child must be 5 by the cut-off, commonly September 1, to start Kindergarten that fall. After that, each year adds one grade until Grade 12 at age 17.

England uses a similar rule with a 31 August cut-off. Children start Reception at 4 and move up one Year each September. This calculator applies your chosen cut-off, shows the US grade and the UK year and key stage, and adds the dates for Kindergarten, graduation and GCSEs.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Choose your child's date of birth.
  2. Pick the academic school year, for example 2026-2027.
  3. Select your cut-off date. September 1 is the default, and August 1, October 1 and December 31 are also available.
  4. Press Calculate Milestone, or change any field and the result refreshes on its own.
  5. Read the placement, the age position in class and the key dates, then copy the link or summary.

Mathematical Formula & Calculation Mechanics

Age at cut-off: compare the birth date with the cut-off date in the first calendar year of the school year, counting whole years and months. A birthday on the cut-off date counts as already reached.

US placement: grade = age at cut-off - 5. Age 3 is Preschool, age 4 is Pre-K, age 5 is Kindergarten, ages 6 to 17 are Grades 1 to 12, and age 18 is College Freshman.

UK placement: year = age on 31 August - 4. Age 3 is Nursery, age 4 is Reception, and ages 5 to 17 are Years 1 to 13. Key Stage 1 is Years 1 and 2, Key Stage 2 is Years 3 to 6, Key Stage 3 is Years 7 to 9, Key Stage 4 is Years 10 and 11, and Key Stage 5 is Years 12 and 13.

Key dates: Kindergarten starts in the first school year when the age at cut-off reaches 5. High school graduation is 13 school years after that start, and GCSEs fall at the end of Year 11, 12 school years after Reception begins. Class position uses the months part of the age: 0 to 2 months is among the youngest, and 9 to 11 months is among the oldest.

Step-by-Step Worked Example

Question: A child was born on 14 March 2018. What grade are they in for 2026-2027 with a September 1 cut-off?

Step 1: On 1 September 2026 the child is 8 years and 5 months old.

Step 2: US grade = 8 - 5 = Grade 3, which is elementary school. The age is 5 months into the year, so they are in the middle of the class.

Step 3: On 31 August 2026 the child is 8, so the UK year = 8 - 4 = Year 4, Key Stage 2.

Step 4: Kindergarten began in 2023-2024, high school graduation is expected in 2036, and Year 11 GCSEs fall in 2034.

Comprehensive Reference Table: School Grade by Birth Date (45 Rows)

The table is for the 2026-2027 school year with a September 1, 2026 cut-off. Each age group is split into the oldest, middle and youngest months of the class. A child born exactly on September 1 belongs to the older age group in the US, and to the younger group in England, which uses 31 August.

Frequently Asked Questions

QuestionAnswer
What grade should my child be in?Find the child's age on the school cut-off date and subtract 5. Age 5 is Kindergarten, age 6 is Grade 1, and age 17 is Grade 12.
What is the school cut-off date?September 1 is the most common date, but it varies by state and district. Some use August 1, October 1 or December 31, so check your local school.
Is a UK Year the same as a US grade? Not by number. Children in the same age group are one number higher in England, so Year 2 matches Grade 1, and Reception is similar to Pre-K.
Can a child start school early or late? Many districts allow early entrance testing or a delayed start, and England allows deferral within the school year. Ask your school about its policy.
Why does an 18-year-old show as College Freshman? At 18 on the cut-off date, most students have finished Grade 12 and begin college or further study, so the tool labels that stage College Freshman.
