How SRM University GPA is Calculated
SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) follows the UGC 10-point Credit-Based Grading System (CBCS) introduced as part of the 2021 Academic Regulation. Each course carries a specific credit weightage and your performance is evaluated on a 10-point scale.
SGPA Formula
SGPA = ฮฃ (Credit_i × GradePoint_i) ÷ ฮฃ Credit_i
Example:
Maths (4 credits, O = 10): 4 × 10 = 40
Physics (3 credits, A+ = 9): 3 × 9 = 27
Programming (3 credits, A = 8): 3 × 8 = 24
Lab (2 credits, O = 10): 2 × 10 = 20
─────────────────────────────────────────
Total Credits = 12 | Quality Points = 111
SGPA = 111 ÷ 12 = 9.25
CGPA Formula
CGPA = ฮฃ (SGPA_i × Credits_i) ÷ ฮฃ Credits_i
Example (2 semesters):
Sem 1: SGPA 8.5 × 24 credits = 204
Sem 2: SGPA 9.0 × 26 credits = 234
────────────────────────────────────
Total = 438 ÷ 50 = CGPA 8.76
CGPA to Percentage Conversion
Percentage = CGPA × 10
Example: CGPA 8.76 → 87.6%
Tips to Improve Your SGPA
- ๐ฏ Focus on high-credit subjects — A 4-credit course has double the impact of a 2-credit lab.
- ๐งช Don't neglect labs — Lab courses (1.5–2 credits) are usually easier to score O grade in.
- ๐ Internal assessment counts — IA typically makes up 40 marks out of 100, secure it early.
- ๐ซ Avoid F grades — F = 0 grade points and drags your SGPA significantly.
- ๐ C → B upgrade matters — Moving from C (5.5) to B (6.0) adds 0.5 points per subject.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the passing grade in SRM University?+
The minimum passing grade at SRM University is C, which corresponds to 5.5 grade points and a marks range of 45–49. However, for good academic standing and placement eligibility, you need at least a B grade (6.0 GP) or above.
How do I convert SRM CGPA to percentage?+
SRM University uses the formula: Percentage = CGPA × 10. So a CGPA of 8.5 equals 85%. This is the official conversion method as per UGC guidelines and SRM's academic regulation 2021.
What is a good CGPA in SRM for placements?+
A CGPA of 6.0+ is the minimum required to register for campus placements at SRM. A 7.5+ CGPA makes you eligible for most MNC companies, while 9.0+ unlocks Super Dream placement opportunities like TCS Digital and high-package roles.
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?+
SGPA (Semester GPA) measures your academic performance for a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the weighted average of all your semester SGPAs across all completed semesters, taking credit hours into account.
Does an F grade affect my CGPA permanently?+
Yes. An F grade (0 grade points) significantly lowers your SGPA for that semester. However, once you clear the arrear (backlog) through supplementary exams, the improved grade replaces the F in your CGPA calculation.
Is the SRM grading system same for all branches?+
Yes. SRM uses the same 10-point UGC grading scale (O=10, A+=9, A=8, B+=7, B=6, C=5.5, F=0) across all B.Tech branches under the 2021 regulation — including CSE, ECE, EEE, Mechanical, Civil, AI-ML, Data Science, Cybersecurity, and more.
