What Is an Age on a Specific Date Calculator?
This calculator tells you exactly how old someone is, or will be, on any date you choose. That helps when a form asks for your age on a deadline, when you need to know if you will be 21 by an event, or when you are planning around a driving, voting or purchasing age.
It also acts as a legal milestone checker. For each common age rule in the US and UK, it shows whether the right is unlocked on your target date, and if not, the date it unlocks. The rules are general and change over time, so always confirm with the official source.
How to Use This Calculator
- Choose the Birth Date.
- Choose the Target Milestone Date. It can be in the past, today or the future.
- Pick the milestone age you want to test, such as 21.
- Press Calculate Milestone, or change any field and the result refreshes on its own.
- Read your exact age, the milestone check and the rights table, then copy the link or summary.
Mathematical Formula & Calculation Mechanics
Exact age: subtract the birth year, month and day from the target year, month and day. If the day goes negative, borrow the real length of the previous month. If the month goes negative, borrow 12 months from the years.
Milestone date: birth date + N years. A person born on 29 February has their birthday counted on 1 March in non-leap years. The milestone is reached if that date is on or before the target date.
Rights checker: each right has a minimum age in months, for example 21 years = 252 months, or 15 years 9 months = 189 months for the UK provisional licence. The tool adds that age to the birth date and compares the result with the target date.
Days from target: milestone date minus target date, in whole days. Leap years are handled by the calendar, so every 29 February is counted.
Step-by-Step Worked Example
Question: Someone was born on 15 June 2006. How old are they on 31 December 2026, and will they be 21 by then?
Step 1: 15 June 2006 to 15 December 2026 is 20 years and 6 months, plus 16 days to 31 December. The exact age is 20 years, 6 months and 16 days.
Step 2: The 21st birthday is 15 June 2027, which is 166 days after the target date. So the answer is no, not yet.
Step 3: Rights unlocked on that date: US learner's permit and adult or voting age at 18, and in the UK the provisional licence, adult status, alcohol and firearm certificate age at 18.
Step 4: Still locked: US alcohol at 21 (15 June 2027), car rental without a fee and the House at 25 (15 June 2031), the Senate at 30 (2036) and the presidency at 35 (2041).

Frequently Asked Questions
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How do I calculate my age on a specific date? | Subtract the birth date from the target date in years, months and days, borrowing the real length of the previous month when needed. This calculator does that for any past or future date. |
| Will I be 21 by a certain date? | Add 21 years to your birth date. If that date falls on or before your target date, the answer is yes. Choose 21 in the milestone menu to see the exact date and the days to spare or still to wait. |
| What is the minimum age to run for Congress or President? | The US Constitution sets 25 for the House of Representatives, 30 for the Senate and 35 for President. Other requirements, such as citizenship, also apply. |
| Is the handgun purchase age 21 everywhere? | Federal law sets 21 for handgun purchases from licensed dealers and 18 for long guns. Court rulings and a 2026 Justice Department opinion challenge the dealer rule, and states differ, so check current federal and state rules. |
| What if I was born on 29 February? | This tool counts your birthday as 1 March in non-leap years. Legal systems differ on whether 28 February or 1 March applies, so confirm with the relevant authority for official purposes. |
