What Is a Half-Birthday?
A half-birthday is the date exactly six months after your birth date. If you were born on 14 March, your half-birthday is 14 September. It is not an official age change, but many families use it for a small celebration, a cake, or a milestone check-in on how much a child has grown.
Half-birthdays are especially popular for people born close to major holidays or in school break periods, because the main birthday can get overshadowed. This calculator finds that date, shows both countdowns live, and adds the zodiac sign that your half-birthday falls under, which usually sits opposite your birth sign.
How to Use This Calculator

Mathematical Formula & Calculation Mechanics
Half-birthday date: add 6 to the birth month (wrapping from December back to January) and keep the same day number. For example, month 8 becomes month 2, and month 11 becomes month 5.
Month-end rule: if the birth day does not exist in the half-birthday month, the last day of that month is used. A 31 August birth gives 28 February (29 in leap years), and a 31 March birth gives 30 September.
Leap day: a 29 February birth gives a 29 August half-birthday. Its official birthday is counted as 1 March in non-leap years. A year is a leap year if it divides by 4, except century years, which must divide by 400.
Countdown: next occurrence minus the current moment, split into days = floor(ms / 86,400,000), hours, minutes and seconds. If today is the date itself, the tool celebrates it and counts down to the following one.
Zodiac: the sign comes from the month and day of the half-birthday using the standard tropical date ranges. Sign changes can shift by a day in some years, so treat cusp dates as approximate.
Step-by-Step Worked Example
Question: Someone was born on 14 March 1990. Today is 20 October 2026, counting from midnight. What are their next birthday and half-birthday?
Step 1: Half-birthday = 14 March + 6 months = 14 September.
Step 2: This year's 14 September has already passed, so the next one is Tuesday, 14 September 2027. From 20 October 2026 that is 329 days away, and the person will be 37 years and 6 months old.
Step 3: The next official birthday is Sunday, 14 March 2027, which is 145 days away. They will turn 37.
Step 4: A 14 March birth falls in Pisces (Water). The half-birthday date, 14 September, falls in Virgo (Earth, ruled by Mercury), the opposite sign.
