What Is a Holiday Gift Budget & Secret Expense Planner?
A holiday gift budget planner helps you decide how much to spend in total and how to divide that money between people, gifts and seasonal costs. This one tracks four numbers at once: your total budget, what you have planned, what you have actually spent and what is left.
It runs entirely in your browser. Your plan saves automatically on this device without an account. A private field next to each recipient keeps gift ideas secret, and the summary you share with a spouse or co-planner never includes them.
How to Use This Tool
- Enter your total holiday budget and pick your currency symbol.
- Edit the sample rows or add your own recipients, choosing a category and a planned amount for each.
- Type a secret gift idea in the private field if you like. It stays on your device only.
- When you buy something, enter the actual price and tick Bought. The snapshot at the top updates instantly.
- Choose whether to include names, then press Copy Summary or Copy Link to share the totals with a co-planner.
Holiday Calendar Mechanics & Mathematical Logic
| Measure | Formula | What It Tells You |
|---|---|---|
| Allocated (Planned) | Sum of every planned amount | How much of your budget is already assigned |
| Actual Spend | Sum of every actual amount | Money already spent |
| Remaining Balance | Total budget minus actual spend | What you can still spend |
| Unallocated | Total budget minus allocated | Budget not yet assigned to anyone |
| Percent Spent | Actual spend divided by total budget, times 100 | Progress through your budget |
| Contingency Buffer | 5% to 10% of the total budget | A reserve for surprise names and price changes |
| Storage | Browser localStorage on this device | No account, no server, no sync between devices |
| Summary Link | Four whole numbers in the ?b= parameter, also shown in your browser address bar: budget, planned, spent and currency | No names, categories or ideas; plain numbers, not encrypted |
Step-by-Step Practical Example
A family sets a $600 budget and plans $120 for a partner, $60 each for two parents, $100 for a child, $40 for a friend, $25 for an office swap and $40 for wrapping and shipping. Planned spend totals $445, so $155 is still unallocated.
So far they have spent $93, which is $58 on one parent and $35 on the friend. Their remaining balance is $507 and they have used 15.5% of the budget. They tick the names option off, copy the summary and send it to a spouse, who sees category totals but no gift ideas.

Consumer Protection Dates, Return Rules & Black Friday Price Guarantees
This is general information, not legal advice. Retailer policies change each year, so read the store's terms before you buy.
| Region | Return & Cancellation Rule | Card Dispute & Payment Protection | Gift Card Rule | Black Friday / Cyber Monday Price Guarantees |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United States | No general federal right to return; the store sets its window. The FTC rule requires shipping within the promised time, or 30 days if none is stated | Report billing errors within 60 days of the statement date under the Fair Credit Billing Act | Federal law bars gift card funds from expiring for at least 5 years | Price matching and holiday price adjustments are store policy, not law. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday follows on the Monday |
| United Kingdom | Online and distance purchases have a 14-day cancellation right from delivery. Faulty goods can be rejected within 30 days for a refund | Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act covers credit card purchases between £100 and £30,000 | Expiry follows the retailer's terms | Price match offers are voluntary. Misleading discount claims are prohibited under UK consumer law |

Frequently Asked Questions
| Question | Direct Answer |
|---|---|
| How do I plan a Christmas gift budget? | Start with one total amount, list every recipient and holiday expense, then give each a planned amount. Keep 5% to 10% in reserve, and enter actual prices as you buy so the remaining balance stays current. |
| Is my budget data stored anywhere? | Your numbers are saved only in your browser's local storage on this device. There is no account and nothing is sent to a server. Clearing your browser data, or using another device, will not show the same plan. |
| Does the shared summary reveal my secret gift ideas? | No. Gift ideas stay in your browser and are never added to the summary or the link. The short link carries only four numbers, and names appear only if you tick the option and copy the text summary. |
| Is the summary link encrypted? | The short link holds only four plain numbers: budget, planned, spent and a currency code. It is not encrypted and it appears in the page address, so anyone who has the link can read those totals and it can show up in browser history. Share it only with people you trust. |
| What is the difference between planned and actual spend? | Planned is the amount you intend to spend on each person. Actual is what you really paid. The tool compares both with your total budget so you can spot overspending early. |
