What Is a New Year Resolution Card & Printable Bucket List?

A New Year resolution card turns your goals into one clear page you can print, tick off and keep. This generator lets you choose goals across four areas of life: physical health, financial wealth, relationships and mental wellness. It then draws a badge-style card with your name, the year and a checklist.

The card year follows the calendar by itself. From July onward it shows next year, and from January to June it shows the current year, so you never edit a date. You can also set a start date to see your day 21, day 66 and day 90 check-in dates.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Type your name and pick a start date, usually January 1.
  2. Open each life area and tap the goals you want. Add your own goal if yours is missing.
  3. Watch the badge card update instantly. You can choose up to 20 goals. Above 8, the card switches to two columns.
  4. Press Download PNG to save the card, or Print Checklist to print it with tick boxes.
  5. Copy the link or use WhatsApp, Facebook or X to share your resolutions with friends.

Step-by-Step Practical Example

Maya picks four goals, one from each area: Walk 8000 steps daily, Save $5000, Call family weekly and Read 20 books. The card shows "Maya's Goals" with four tick boxes and the checkpoints for a January 1 start: day 21 on January 21, day 66 on March 7 and day 90 on March 31.

Maya copies the link and sends it to a friend. It looks like this:

?r=1,9,17,27&n=Maya

Added to this page's address, it opens the same card, which the friend can edit into their own.

Top 50 Most Achievable New Year Resolutions & Success Rates

No study measures a success rate for each individual resolution. The bands below are planning estimates, anchored to the published overall figure of roughly 40% to 46% of resolvers still succeeding at six months (Norcross and colleagues), and adjusted for how complex each habit is. Difficulty is a 1 to 5 rating of how hard the habit is to keep through the 66-day formation window.

Behavioral Psychology Benchmarks: 21-Day, 66-Day & 90-Day Habit Phases

This table separates what research found from what is folk wisdom. Sources are summarized from the published studies, so check the original papers if you need exact figures.

BenchmarkSource & What It FoundEvidence StrengthHow to Use It
21-Day Initiation PhaseThe idea is popularly traced to Maxwell Maltz's 1960 book Psycho-Cybernetics, which noted that people took about 21 days to adjust to a new self-image. It was an observation, not a habit-formation study.Weak (anecdotal)Treat days 1 to 21 as a setup and trial period, not as proof of a habit.
66-Day Habit FormationLally, van Jaarsveld, Potts and Wardle (University College London, 2010) followed 96 volunteers. The median time to automatic behavior was 66 days, with a range of 18 to 254 days.Moderate (small sample)Plan for about 10 weeks and expect your own timing to vary.
Missed DaysThe same UCL study found that missing a single opportunity did not noticeably derail habit formation.ModerateIf you skip a day, resume the next day instead of quitting.
90-Day Retention PhaseNo single study defines 90 days. Norcross and Vangarelli (1988) found about 43% of resolvers were still succeeding at 3 months.Moderate (about 200 people)Use day 90 as a formal review and adjustment checkpoint.
Six-Month OutcomeNorcross and colleagues found about 40% of resolvers still successful at 6 months in 1988. A 2002 study reported 46% of resolvers versus 4% of non-resolvers after 6 months.ModerateMaking an explicit resolution clearly beat making none.
Stanford: Tiny Habits and B=MAPBJ Fogg of the Stanford Behavior Design Lab proposes that behavior happens when motivation, ability and a prompt come together, and that tiny versions of a habit are easiest to start.Practitioner framework, limited independent trialsShrink the habit and anchor it to something you already do.
UCLA: Process SimulationPham and Taylor (UCLA, 1999) found that students who mentally rehearsed the steps of studying performed better than those who pictured only a good grade.Moderate (student samples)Picture the actions you will take, not only the outcome.
Implementation IntentionsGollwitzer and Sheeran (2006) analyzed 94 tests of if-then planning and found a medium-to-large effect on goal attainment (d = 0.65).Strong (meta-analysis)Write it as: if it is 7 AM, then I walk for 10 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

QuestionDirect Answer
How do I make a New Year resolution card?Type your name, choose goals from the four life areas or add your own, and the card builds instantly. Then print it, download it as a PNG image, or copy the link to share it.
How many resolutions should I choose? The tool allows up to 20, and the card switches to two columns after 8, but fewer is usually easier to keep. Three to five focused goals spread across different life areas is a realistic target for most people.
How long does it take to form a habit?A University College London study found a median of 66 days, with a range from 18 to 254 days. The popular 21-day figure is a myth rather than a research finding.
What percentage of New Year resolutions succeed?Studies by John Norcross and colleagues found that about 40% of resolvers were still succeeding after six months, and about 19% after two years. Exact numbers vary by goal, so treat them as a rough guide.
Can I print or download my resolution card?Yes. Press Download PNG to save the card as an image, or Print Checklist to print it with tick boxes. The card is drawn in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
