The official name for Android O will finally be revealed this month.

The second half of the year is when Google updates Android and this year, it’s Android O. While there have been a lot of leaks and rumors around Android O features and specifications, we’re still waiting for the finer details. As per naming convention, Android O would be named after a popular dessert. Though no official date has been unveiled by the company, considering August is almost half gone, the official announcement cannot be far off. As per latest reports, Android O will be officially announced and rolled out starting August 21. That is barely a week from now.

Along with beginning the official roll out, the announcement will resolve one of the biggest questions surrounding Android O – the official name. With Android K or KitKat, Google for the first time announced a partnership with a popular brand. Android O could very well tread a similar route. Rumor mills have long since suggested that Android O will be called Android Oreo, the most beloved cream cookie. Google and Oreo could announce the partnership on August 21. Similar to Android KitKat, there could be special contests and events planned around the two big names. However, the official announcement is still not here and Google could surprise us all by choosing a completely different name.

The leak regarding the official announcement came from Twitter user David Ruddock who posted a series of tweets regarding the event. Though he confirmed that Google will definitely announce the next version of the OS later this month, he refrained from spilling the beans as to what would the name be. He did confirm though that he would not shy away from revealing the truth if some other publication managed to carry the actual name. Also, along with revealing the name, Google is reportedly planning a big event around the next OS unveiling. The details regarding the event are unknown, but it is likely to be something around the solar eclipse as US will witness its first ever complete solar eclipse in over a century on the same date.

I'm not going to ruin the surprise of the name. It doesn't really matter and I feel like spoiling it actually is kind of a spoiler.

It also sounds like Google is planning some degree of spectacle around this. It won't just be a random "oh hey here's a statue" thing.

August 21 will be when US will witness the event. Google has

timed the launch of Android O with the eclipse considering during the solar eclipse, it is just the ring around the sun that is visible in the sky, in the shape of a big O. Apart from Android Oreo, there have been no new names suggested for the upcoming Android OS. Some of the older options suggested are Android Oatmeal Cookie. However, a recent developer’s preview of Android 8.0 showed an Octopus, which has now confused people as to what the actual name might be, Not only Ruddock, but even Evan Blass has mentioned on Twitter that Android 8.0 will officially arrive on August 21. Android O release scheduled for the week of 8/21, "most likely on the 21st itself."

Android O Beta version has already been rolled out to developers and old Google smartphone owners who signed up for the update. Android O is expected to come with battery enhancements, picture-in-picture feature in apps as well as changes in notifications panel. Google pixel owners are the first in line scheduled to get the new update followed by Nexus devices. As the Android O version is adapted by other OEMs, flagship smartphones from the likes of Samsung, LG, Motorola, and others will soon start getting the updates. This is expected to be one of the last Android OS versions on many older flagship smartphones like the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T
