Tip Formula
Tip = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100)
Total = Bill + Tax + Tip
Per Person = Total ÷ People
Total = Bill + Tax + Tip
Per Person = Total ÷ People
Example (20% tip, 2 people)
Bill = $80.00
Tip = $80 × 0.20 = $16.00
Each pays = ($80+$16) ÷ 2 = $48.00
Tip = $80 × 0.20 = $16.00
Each pays = ($80+$16) ÷ 2 = $48.00
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about calculating tips and tipping etiquette worldwide.
To calculate a 20% tip, multiply your bill by 0.20 (or divide by 5). Example: 20% of $65 = $13. Total = $78. A quick mental trick: find 10% (move decimal one place left) and double it. $65 → $6.50 × 2 = $13 tip.
In the USA: 15% for adequate service, 18–20% for good service, 20–25%+ for exceptional service. Many etiquette experts now consider 20% the baseline. In other countries the standard varies — see our World Tipping Guide above.
Technically, it's customary to tip on the pre-tax subtotal in the USA, since the tax isn't part of the service value. However, many people simply tip on the total for convenience. The difference is small — on a $100 bill with 8% tax, tipping pre-tax vs post-tax is only about $1.60 difference at 20%.
The fairest way is: calculate the total bill + tip, then divide by the number of people. This calculator does that automatically. If people ordered very different amounts, you can calculate each person's subtotal separately and add the agreed tip % to each. For odd cents, round so the total matches exactly.
Round Up adjusts the tip slightly so the total comes out to the nearest whole dollar. This makes it easy to pay with exact bills or set a clean Venmo amount. Example: Bill $47.60 + 18% tip = $56.17. Round up makes it $57.00 by increasing the tip from $8.57 to $9.40.
No — tipping culture varies enormously worldwide. In Japan and South Korea, tipping can be considered offensive. In the USA and Canada, 15–20% is socially expected. In Europe, rounding up the bill is common but not a strict percentage. In Australia, tipping is optional due to high minimum wage. See our full World Tipping Guide section above.
For food delivery in the USA, 15–20% is standard with a minimum of $3–5 regardless of order size. Tip more (20–25%) for bad weather, long distances, large orders, or great service. Many delivery apps show the driver's payout — a higher tip makes a real difference to gig workers.
To find what tip percentage was given: Tip % = (Tip Amount ÷ Bill Amount) × 100. Example: You paid $12 tip on an $80 bill. ($12 ÷ $80) × 100 = 15%. Use the tip amount field in custom mode to work backwards.
