DPI Standards

DPI RangeUse Case
Below 150
Low quality — may appear blurry when printed
150–299
Acceptable for large-format printing (banners, posters)
300+
Professional print standard — crisp, sharp output
600+
Archival / high-detail photography and fine art printing
72–96 DPI is sufficient for web/screen display only. For print, always target 300 DPI minimum.

How DPI Is Calculated

PDF pages use points as the unit (72 points = 1 inch). For each image found in the PDF, we calculate:

DPI = pixel width ÷ (rendered width in points ÷ 72)

This gives the effective DPI — the resolution at the actual size the image appears on the printed page, not just the raw pixel count.

Free PDF Image DPI Checker — Check Image Resolution & Print Quality in Any PDF

DPI (Dots Per Inch) determines how sharp an image looks when printed. A PDF can contain multiple embedded images, each with its own DPI. Before sending a document to a printer, publisher, or client, checking the DPI of every embedded image is essential. Low DPI images look crisp on screen but print blurry and pixelated. This tool analyses every image in your PDF, calculates the effective DPI, and gives you a clear print-readiness verdict — all in your browser. No upload, no server, no watermark.
Per-Image Analysis

Every embedded raster image in your PDF is checked individually. See the DPI, pixel dimensions, and print status of each image.

Print Readiness Verdict

Green = print-ready (300+ DPI). Yellow = caution (150–299 DPI). Red = low quality (below 150 DPI). Instant at-a-glance verdict.

Per-Page Breakdown

Results grouped by page so you know exactly which page has the problematic low-resolution image.

Who Needs a PDF Image DPI Checker?

  • Graphic designers: Before submitting print-ready artwork to a print shop, verify every embedded image meets the 300 DPI minimum. One low-resolution image can cause the entire job to be rejected or reprint.
  • Publishers and editors: Check image resolution in manuscripts, brochures, and magazine layouts before sending to the press.
  • Photographers: Verify that photo books, portfolios, and client deliverables contain images at the correct resolution for the intended print size.
  • Marketing teams: Ensure product catalogues, flyers, and marketing PDFs meet quality standards before distribution to partners and clients.
  • Prepress professionals: Quickly audit large PDF files for low-resolution images that would cause print quality complaints.
  • Legal and compliance teams: Verify that scanned documents meet required resolution standards for submission to courts, regulators, and archives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What DPI is required for professional printing?
300 DPI is the industry standard for professional offset and digital printing. Images below 300 DPI may appear blurry, pixelated, or soft when printed at their intended size. For large-format printing (banners, posters, signage) viewed from a distance, 150–200 DPI is generally acceptable. For fine art, photography prints, and archival documents, 600 DPI ensures maximum sharpness. For web and screen display only, 72–96 DPI is sufficient.
Why does my PDF show no images detected?
This happens when your PDF contains only text and vector graphics. Vector graphics (logos, icons, diagrams created in Illustrator or similar tools) are resolution-independent — they scale to any size without pixelation and do not have a DPI value. Only raster images (photographs, scanned documents, JPEG/PNG files embedded in the PDF) have DPI. If your PDF was created from a Word document with no inserted photos, it will typically show no raster images.
How is effective DPI calculated for PDF images?
PDFs use points as their unit of measurement (72 points = 1 inch). The effective DPI of an embedded image is calculated as: DPI = pixel width ÷ (rendered width in points ÷ 72). This gives the actual print resolution at the size the image occupies on the page — which is more meaningful than raw pixel count. An image can have millions of pixels but still be low-DPI if it is stretched to fill a large area.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
Never. This tool uses PDF.js — Mozilla's open-source PDF rendering library — to analyse your file entirely within your browser. Your PDF is read into browser memory and processed locally. No data is transmitted to any server at any point. This makes it completely safe for confidential design files, client documents, and sensitive business materials. See our Zero Data Storage Policy.
Can I fix low DPI images in my PDF?
This tool detects low-DPI images but does not modify them. To fix low-resolution images: (1) Go back to your original source file and replace the low-resolution images with high-resolution versions (300+ DPI). (2) Re-export the PDF with high-quality image settings. (3) Artificially upscaling an existing low-resolution image does not add real detail — always use the highest-resolution source image available.
What is the difference between DPI and PPI?
DPI (Dots Per Inch) is a printing measurement — how many ink dots a printer places per inch of paper. PPI (Pixels Per Inch) is a digital/screen measurement — how many pixels fit per inch on a display. For PDF images, the terms are used interchangeably in everyday practice. What matters for print quality is the effective resolution of the embedded image at its printed size, which this tool calculates as effective DPI.
