About This Calculator
Everything you need to know about Indian railway distances and journey times
๐บ️ How Distance is Measured
Indian Railways measures distance along the actual rail track, not straight-line (aerial) distance. This tool uses the railway route km which includes bends, elevation changes, and diversions. Track distance is typically 10–25% more than aerial distance.
⏱️ Journey Time Estimation
Journey time is estimated from average speed of each train category:
๐ Rajdhani/Vande Bharat: ~90 km/h
๐ Mail/Express: ~65 km/h
๐ Passenger trains: ~40 km/h
⚡ High-Speed (future): ~110 km/h
Actual time includes halts and seasonal variations.
๐งญ Indian Railway Zones
Indian Railways has 18 zones. Fare and distance calculation varies by zone.

This tool is faster, mobile-friendly, and works without login. IRCTC's distance tool is buried inside their booking flow and requires registration. Here you get instant results with journey time estimates for 4 train types (Rajdhani, Mail/Express, Passenger, High Speed) — all in one click.
Yes. This is our biggest advantage over other tools. We cover 300+ stations including small towns no other calculator lists — like Hazaribagh Road, Sasaram, Buxar, Supaul, Kishanganj, Narkatiaganj, Chapra, Siwan, Daltonganj, Lohardaga, Giridih, Deoghar, Dumka, and more. Search by station name or code.
Yes. After selecting stations, choose your train type (Rajdhani/Vande Bharat at ~90 km/h, Mail/Express at ~65 km/h, Passenger at ~40 km/h). The tool calculates estimated journey time including average stops. Results are shown alongside distance and fare estimate.
Just type the city or station name in the search box — the autocomplete shows the station code in brackets, e.g. New Delhi (NDLS), Howrah Junction (HWH), Dhanbad Junction (DHN). Station codes are 2–5 letter abbreviations assigned by Indian Railways.
๐ Distance Questions
Railway route km is the actual track distance a train travels — including bends, curves, and terrain. Aerial distance (crow-fly) is a straight line between two cities. Railway distance is typically 10–30% more than aerial distance. Indian Railways officially uses route km for fare calculation, not straight-line distance.
New Delhi to Mumbai Central (MMCT) is 1,384 km by train (Western Railway route via Rajdhani). Via Central Railway (CSTM) the route is 1,541 km. The Rajdhani Express covers this in approximately 16–17 hours at ~90 km/h average.
New Delhi (NDLS) to Howrah Junction (HWH) is 1,447 km by train. The Rajdhani Express covers this route in about 17–18 hours. The Grand Chord route via Gaya is the most common; the Loop Line via Allahabad is slightly longer.
Mumbai CST (CSTM) to Chennai Central (MAS) is 1,279 km by train. Trains like the Chennai Express and Dadar-Chennai Express cover this in approximately 22–24 hours. The route passes through Pune, Solapur, Wadi, Guntakal, and Renigunta.
Patna Junction (PNBE) to New Delhi (NDLS) is 1,001 km by train. The Rajdhani Express completes this in ~12 hours at ~85 km/h average. Mail/Express trains take 16–18 hours. The route passes through Mughalsarai, Allahabad, Kanpur, and Agra.
Dhanbad Junction (DHN) to New Delhi (NDLS) is 1,151 km by train. Trains like the Toofan Express, Howrah Rajdhani (via DHN), and Jharkhand Sampark Kranti cover this route in 17–20 hours depending on train type.
Ranchi Junction (RNC) to Patna Junction (PNBE) is 420 km by train. Journey takes approximately 7–9 hours via the Ranchi-Patna Express. The route goes through Hazaribagh Road, Koderma, and Gaya.
Howrah Junction (HWH) to Puri is 501 km by train. The Puri Express and Shatabdi Express are popular options, taking 7–9 hours. The route passes through Kharagpur, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack.
Chennai Central (MAS) to Bengaluru City (SBC) is 357 km by train. The Shatabdi Express takes about 5 hours at ~70 km/h. It is one of the busiest Shatabdi routes in South India, running multiple times a day.
Guwahati (GHY) to New Delhi (NDLS) is 1,960 km by train. The Rajdhani Express (15909/15910) covers this in about 26–28 hours. Other trains like the Avadh Assam Express take 36–40 hours on the same route.
⏱️ Journey Time Questions
The Mumbai Rajdhani Express (12951/12952) takes approximately 15 hours 55 minutes from New Delhi to Mumbai Central (1,384 km). It runs via Vadodara and is one of the fastest trains on this route.
For a 500 km journey: Rajdhani/Shatabdi takes ~6–7 hours, Mail/Express takes ~8–9 hours, Passenger trains take ~13–14 hours. Exact time depends on stoppages, terrain, and the specific route. Use the calculator above — select distance and train type for an instant estimate.
Average commercial speed by category: Vande Bharat/Rajdhani — 80–110 km/h; Shatabdi — 75–90 km/h; Mail/Express — 55–70 km/h; Superfast — 55–65 km/h; Passenger — 30–45 km/h. These are average speeds including halts, not maximum speed.
The Vivek Express (15906) from Dibrugarh (Assam) to Kanyakumari (Tamil Nadu) is India's longest train journey at 4,273 km, taking approximately 82–83 hours (about 3.5 days). It passes through 9 states and 57 stations.
Among scheduled IR trains, the Nagpur–Ajni shuttle and some metro-adjacent suburban trains cover just 3–7 km. Among intercity trains, the Howrah–Kolkata route (KOAA) is just 5 km. Toy trains like the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway have very short segments too.
๐ฐ Fare & Booking Questions
Indian Railways charges fare based on distance slabs (route km). Base fare per km decreases for longer distances. To this, add: Class surcharge (Sleeper, 3AC, 2AC, 1AC), Superfast charge (₹30–75 for SF trains), Reservation fee (₹15–60), and 5% GST. Approximate fares are shown in this calculator's results.
For reserved classes (Sleeper, 3AC, 2AC, 1AC), Indian Railways requires a minimum distance of 500 km for most express trains, or as applicable to the train's reservation rules. For unreserved/general class, there is no minimum distance requirement.
For 1,000 km, train is almost always cheaper. A 3AC train ticket costs ₹1,200–1,800 typically, while budget flights start at ₹2,500–5,000 and can be ₹8,000–15,000 at peak times. Train is also more comfortable for overnight journeys. Flights are faster (2 hrs vs 15 hrs) but add airport time.
This calculator shows distance and time estimates only — it does not show live seat availability. For real-time seat availability, use IRCTC.co.in (official), the NTES app (National Train Enquiry System), or RailYatri / ConfirmTkt for seat availability predictions.
๐ Train Type Questions
Rajdhani Express — connects state capitals to Delhi; overnight; AC only; meals included; ~85–110 km/h average. Shatabdi Express — day train; chair car + executive; meals included; ~75–100 km/h; returns same day. Vande Bharat Express is India's semi-high-speed self-propelled train with a top speed of 160 km/h and average commercial speed of 95–110 km/h. It runs on 50+ routes across India as of 2025, including Delhi–Varanasi, Delhi–Amritsar, Mumbai–Solapur, Chennai–Bengaluru, Howrah–NJP, and many more. It has no locomotive — the engine is distributed across coaches.
A Superfast train in Indian Railways is any train with an average speed of 55 km/h or more (including halts). These trains carry a superfast surcharge of ₹30–75 extra per ticket. Most Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, and many Mail/Express trains are classified as Superfast.
Duronto Express ("relentless" in Bengali) is a non-stop or minimal-stop train between two cities. It has all AC classes (1AC, 2AC, 3AC) and Sleeper. Unlike Rajdhani which serves only capitals, Duronto connects major commercial cities. Meals are included. Speed is similar to Rajdhani at ~80–100 km/h average.
๐บ️ Zones & Network Questions
Indian Railways has 18 zones as of 2024: NR, NCR, NER, NWR, ER, ECR, ECoR, WR, WCR, CR, SCR, SR, SWR, SER, SECR, NFR, NF Metro, and South Coast Railway. Each zone is managed independently with its own HQ and operates trains within and across its territory.
Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of railway stations (~1,100+) due to its large area and population. Rajasthan is second due to its geographical size. States like Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and Maharashtra also have large station counts. Smaller northeastern states have the fewest stations.
As of 2025, Sikkim and Meghalaya are the only states with no operational railway within their borders (nearest stations are in West Bengal and Assam). Manipur has a partial new line to Jiribam. Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram have very limited rail connectivity at border points only.
Ghum station on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (toy train) at an elevation of 2,258 metres (7,407 feet) above sea level is India's highest railway station. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Shimla (Kalka-Shimla Railway) is another high-altitude mountain railway station.
๐ Trip Planning Questions
Indian Railways opens booking 60 days in advance (120 days for some special trains). For popular routes, Rajdhani and AC classes fill up within hours of opening. Best to book as early as possible. If waitlisted, use the Tatkal quota (opens 1 day before departure) or check Premium Tatkal for guaranteed seats at higher price.
Tatkal is a last-minute booking quota that opens 1 day before train departure at 10 AM (for AC classes) and 11 AM (for non-AC). It charges an extra Tatkal surcharge (₹100–400 depending on class and distance). Seats are guaranteed — no waitlist in Tatkal. Available on IRCTC.co.in.
Best apps for live train tracking: NTES (National Train Enquiry System) by Indian Railways — most accurate; Where is my Train — works offline using GPS; RailYatri — live tracking + delay predictions; IRCTC Rail Connect — official app with PNR status. All are free on Android and iOS.
Almost — but not quite all. 26 of 28 states have direct rail connectivity. Sikkim and Meghalaya currently have no operational railway within state boundaries. All 8 Union Territories have rail access except Lakshadweep (island territory). Indian Railways is expanding — new lines to the Northeast are opening regularly.
